I have always felt that the New Moon is the most misunderstood phase of the lunar cycle (which makes it my favorite). While the Full Moon gets all the theatrics and "New Age glitter," the New Moon is where the real structural work happens. Scientifically, we see the moon's power in the tides as a physical manifestation of the gravitational pull between water and the lunar body. Spiritually, this "dark" phase is the cosmic pause, the moment when the slate is wiped clean and the soil is ready for new seeds.
Callahan’s Cauldron uses purified mountain well water as the medium for this blend, which is then charged with Black Obsidian. Geologically, obsidian is volcanic glass, formed when lava cools so rapidly that it doesn't have time to crystallize. This "flash-frozen" fire gives the stone its signature energetic edge. In shadow work, obsidian is the stone of the "true self." It doesn't sugarcoat. It forces you to face your own reflections to achieve deep healing and patience.
When you use this water, you aren't just splashing around, you're engaging with an anchor. By associating this water with the Root Chakra, it pulls high-concept manifestation down into the physical world. Use this water in moments when you need to clear away the emotional static of the previous month and regain self-control before starting something new.
Ritual Guide: The “Slate Clean” Threshold Wash
A step-by-step guide for using New Moon Water to reset sacred space, strengthen personal grounding, and prepare spiritual tools for new intention.
The Altar Reset (Cleaning)
Use this New Moon Water to both physically and energetically cleanse your altar or any sacred objects that feel heavy from the previous cycle. Lightly dampen a clean cloth with a small amount of the water.
As you wipe each surface, visualize grounding energy absorbing old static and clearing the space back to a neutral foundation ready for new intention.
The Personal Anchor (Anointing)
For emotional grounding and self-control, place a few drops of the water on the Root Chakra area at the base of the spine or on your pulse points.
Applying it before meditation can help keep awareness centered in the body, allowing you to face the truths revealed during the dark moon with steadiness and clarity.
The Tool Charge (Immersion)
If jewelry or crystals feel energetically dull, place them in a small bowl and add a splash of the New Moon Water. Leave them to rest overnight during the dark moon phase.
This immersion symbolically returns the item to a neutral state, clearing emotional residue and preparing it to receive a fresh, intentional purpose.
The Tarot Fellow Standard
I source these waters from Callahan’s Cauldron, a small business that focuses almost exclusively on the art of moon waters. I love them because not only do they save me time (I never remember to make my own moon water, don't ask me why) but they understand that water is a sensitive recording medium for intention. They don't just use tap water, they use mountain well water and ensure the Black Obsidian chips remain inside the bottle so the water stays "charged" while it sits on your shelf. They also respect the astronomical timing required to make this tool properly.
If you find the energy of the New Moon too heavy or introspective, you can balance it by burning Palo Santo to bring a bit of "light" back into the room after your cleansing. Alternatively, pair this with a Black Candle to lean fully into the protective, grounding nature of the obsidian.
