The Cauldron as a Ritual Tool

The cauldron is one of the oldest spiritual tools in Western and Celtic traditions. Iron and bronze cauldrons appear in the mythology of the Irish Dagda, the Welsh goddess Cerridwen, and Greek figures like Medea. In ritual contexts, the cauldron represents transformation, the union of the four elements, and the feminine creative principle. A small cast iron burner carries that symbolic weight in a practical form.

Cast iron is the traditional material for cauldrons because of its heat retention and durability. This 3-inch version is sized for the altar or ritual table. The gloss black finish is both aesthetic and functional, adding a smooth surface that is easy to wipe clean after each use without affecting the iron's heat properties.

    Three Ways to Burn

The elongated oval basin serves three purposes without modification. Three holes drilled into the rim accept standard incense sticks, letting ash fall safely into the basin. The wide flat basin fits most standard cone shapes directly. And with a sand base, it holds a lit charcoal disc for burning loose resins. Few burners at this size and price offer all three functions in one piece.

How to Use the Cast Iron Cauldron Burner

Three methods for burning incense in your cast iron cauldron.

    1. Burn Resin on Charcoal

Place the cauldron on a heat-safe surface and fill the basin with a half-inch of sand or salt for insulation. Light a charcoal disc with tongs until it begins to glow and spark, then set it into the sand. Wait 60 to 90 seconds before adding resin.

    2. Add Loose Resin Properly

Add a small pinch of loose resin, about the size of a pea, directly onto the hot charcoal. Frankincense, myrrh, and copal all work well in this burner. Add small amounts at a time; too much resin at once produces dense smoke and may char quickly.

    3. Use Stick or Cone Incense

For stick incense, place a stick through one of the three holes in the rim so ash falls into the basin. For cones, set the cone directly in the basin. Allow the charcoal to cool fully before disposing. Wipe the interior with a dry cloth after use.

    The Tarot Fellow Standard

I stock this burner because its triple-use design and cast iron construction give it a longevity that cheaper ceramic or soapstone burners do not match. At this price point, it is genuinely useful as both an altar piece and a daily incense tool. Browse my incense burners for more options.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can this cauldron burn stick incense, cones, and resin?

Yes. Three holes in the rim hold standard incense sticks upright. The basin also fits cone incense and charcoal discs with resin. This triple-use design makes it one of the more versatile small burners available at this price point in cast iron.

Do I need to buy charcoal discs separately?

Charcoal discs must be purchased separately. Hookah-style self-lighting charcoal discs in 33mm or 40mm diameter work well in this burner. Do not use barbecue briquettes. Always burn in a ventilated space with a heat-safe surface underneath it.

Will the gloss black finish hold up to heat over time?

The gloss black finish is a baked enamel coating on the cast iron. It is heat-resistant but can show scorch marks over time without sand insulation. Scorch marks are cosmetic only and do not affect function. The cast iron itself lasts indefinitely.

How large is this cauldron and does it sit stably?

The cauldron measures 3 inches in length and 2 inches in width. It is an altar-scale burner, not a full-size cauldron. It sits on three short legs and has enough interior depth to safely hold a lit charcoal disc with sand insulation beneath it.
